… because Lesley Roy is here to take your place!
It’s hard to believe that it was just a few years ago when one of the biggest, and most amazing pop songs of the decade hit the airwaves; Kelly Clarkson’s Since U Been Gone. Her pop-rock anthem was the ultimate “moving on” after the break up song, and was fueled by hard female vocals, and raw artistic talent that we hadn’t seen from the clearly amazing singer who won the first season of American Idol. With that song, Kelly shed her past, and really made a name for herself as an artist who proved that she didn’t need a talent competition to sell records; she was the real deal.
And you know what? She was; the Grammy’s noticed, and threw trophies at her. Millions of records were bought by adoring fans, and single after amazing single came off of the album that Since U Been Gone helped sell. However, a few years passed, and fans wanted more… they needed something amazing from Kelly, because they knew that she could deliver it. Unfortunately, her third release, My December was far from what was expected, and as such, interest in Kelly diminished. Sure, the hardcore fans still love her (including myself), but not much of her new record made waves like the smash Since U Been Gone had done before.
Where am I going with this, you may ask? Well, this all sprang to mind when I first heard Lesley Roy’s infectious single “I’m Gone, I’m Going” a few weeks ago. Hearing that song reminded me of the ferociousness that Kelly had a few years ago, and the power with which she demanded to be heard. For me, Lesley Roy has picked up where the Kelly I loved left off. As such, I feel that she has the potential to make waves similar to those that Kelly did in this stale music industry, and if this song is any indication of what she can do, I predict she is going to make tsunamis.
Kelly, honey, I love ya, and I hope you have fun on tour with Reba, but while you are out, Lesley Roy is stealing your thunder, so I just thought you should know that you have someone to watch out for; she is the real deal, just like you. I can’t wait to hear more from Lesley as her record release looms on the horizon; and deep in my heart, I can’t wait for the next release from Kelly as well… maybe the fourth record will be even better than the second, and can help us forget about that last misstep. Here’s hoping. In the meantime, I am all about Lesley Roy.
Have a listen to I’m Gone, I’m Going by Lesley Roy; I’m sure you will agree that it is sheer pop brilliance:

This is very Kelly Clarksonish! And I can’t agree with you more about her last album, so so sad. I really was hoping she’d prove ‘em wrong and sadly she didn’t. Not sure I like Lesley’s voice quite as much as Kelly though.

Shan, I agree that her voice is a little more rough, but the way she belts it in this song shows she has the pipes!
