I’ve noticed I’m compelled to write a lot lately about a large number of things. The only problem with all of these things is that I do not have a lot to say about them. So instead, I’m putting together a brief on pop music news that is relevant to you. This is partially to test the waters to see if something like this is well received or if it is preferred to stick to more specific posts. Here we go….
Pop Topics today includes a taste of what is coming down the Pop pipe for the rest of 2008, some music gossip, information on Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s next album, and much more. Feed your need, and read ahead.
Dido is back for another try. Her first single is “Don’t Believe In Love” which is of course a typical Dido song. It’s like she never left at all. It’s a safe single, radio friendly, and a bit boring. Maybe I was expecting more, a bigger splash/return to the music scene. Maybe it just needs to be replayed a few more times…

There is a pop album coming out in about a month that is so brilliant, that I would prefer saving any mention of it for a proper review come the end of September. Along with Lady Gaga’s release, I would put it up as one of the best pop albums of the year. Hint: This is her long-awaited second album!

I discovered something yesterday that was so shocking that it interrupted my conversation with a friend mid-sentence. It has been announced on Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s record label website that she is putting the finishing touches on her fourth album which is now due out early 2009. While HMV.co.uk still lists it at the end of October, this tragic extension of 3-4 months breaks my little pop heart. On the one hand, it could mean she’s doing everything she can to improve the album before release, on the other, it may mean there is too much competition in the last quarter, so instead they’ll release it in the quieter first quarter of the year.

To update you on other notable CD releases for the final quarter of the year, here are a few more albums I’m eagerly awaiting: Pussycat Dolls - Doll Domination, Pink - Funhouse, Snow Patrol - A Hundread Million Suns, Dido - Safe Trip Home, Annie - Don’t Stop, Fall Out Boy - Folie A Deux, Michelle Branch - Everything Comes And Goes, Jem - Down To Earth, Will Young - Let It Go, Anastacia - Heavy Rotation, and of course there are always rumours of others…

I didn’t know this, but Girlicious released their album midway through August in Canada, but the release in the states isn’t until the end of September. I don’t think I’ve seen this before. Perhaps the US will be receiving a different album than Canada and we were simply the test market. I’ve heard the album and it was a bit of a lunch-box letdown. The tracks lacked any originality and to put it simply, the cover art was just pathetic. Let’s hope they have some surprises for the US release.

Finally, I have no other information on the departure of Carah from Shiny Toy Guns. It’s been a popular topic and the internet has been an amazing forum for speculation and conspiracy theories. I’m sure it will come out one day.
