Pop Unplugged

November 9th, 2008 | Posted by Justin
I was making Shan listen to horrible sad songs the other day at his apartment and then I started thinking about great pop songs unplugged.

Perhaps songs with a kick ass beat that were completely re-interpreted in an unplugged fashion that would give them a little different shimmer than we’re used to. These 10 are completely not all-encompassing; but ones you should probably check out none-the-less.

1. September “Satellites” - Her acoustic version is totally different. It actually really shows off her vocal ability and the bluesy and husky timbre that she has. What sometimes can be monotonous melodies in dance music, this version shows how sometimes even stripped back, the writing is pretty solid musically.

2. Jordan Sparks ft. Chris Brown “No Air” - I was such a sucker for this song. And then when I heard the acoustic version, I about just fell out of my chair. It makes me love the harmonies that much more and how much I want to sing this around a campfire with a bunch of people I love. Cheesy, yes. But that’s how delicious this version is.

3. Kylie “All I See” - Oh, Kylie. You had several songs I could have picked from. But I think this may have been my favorite. So rarely do we get to see Minogue’s unfiltered voice so this was definitely a treat when she released this rehearsal version via the web before the X tube debuted (mind you without this track appearing but on only a few initial dates and then later scrapped, sadly).

4. Kelly Clarkson “Since You Been Gone” - The live version she performed on VH1 was stunning. Her voice always blows me away and this version is simply flawless. This pop classic can’t be ignored because even acoustically, it’s amazing. And I’ll treat you with this one, since it was never an official release:

5. Goldfrapp “Ooh La La” - Recently Alison and crew have been performing this ditty on the Seventh Tree tour but have literally transformed it from a four-to-the-floor stompper to a down home, jug chugging hoe-down. It’s the polar opposite from what I would have ever expected, which is why I keep going back to Goldfrapp time and time again. Pick it up on the Goldfrapp Itunes Originals.

6. Dannii “It Won’t Work Out” - My mother always said you had to be fair, so if I’m bringing one Minogue to the party, I’m gonna have to bring the other one. Off of her Neon Nights release, the original wasn’t necessarily uptempo, but more electronic sounding. This is just another sweet song about that moment you realize that the relationship you’re in is all in vain. And there’s no going back.

7. Robyn “With Every Heartbeat”/ “Be Mine” - Either track’s acoustic, down-key versions are so heartbreaking. While the latter’s lyrics were obviously a bit on the sadder side, I don’t think many people got a chance to listen to the words of the former. ‘Heartbeat’ is so stark with just the piano accompaniment and the longing in the words get to take center stage on this version.

8. Roisin Murphy “Let Me Know” - Live from her Itunes Acoustic performance, Roisin almost returns to her previous album with the acoustic cover of her dance hit “Let Me Know.” It’s clearly a jazz influenced, upright bass being slapped all over the scales. Flavorful guitar work to boot.

9. Sam Sparro “American Boy” - Sam performed this live on Brit DJ Jo Whiley’s radio show. I know, I’m breaking my own rules. This song is actually Estelle’s, but this cover is too damn good not to mention. His voice is pure cashmere. Smooth, sultry, seductive and works against the dance beats and the hip-hop flavor of this unplugged version. The acoustic version of “Black and Gold” sounds like it could be an old Cole Porter or Gershwin song. It’s fun, but not as much as this one.

10. Melanie C “Here It Comes Again” - live at Radio Donna, the melody gets to shine with this type of acoustic, unplugged performance. I think I’ve always had a soft spot in me for this tune, especially the middle 8. Another song to know you should dust yourself off and get back up in the game. And maybe that when you don’t expect, the love will come again and blindside you; check out her performance:

I absolutely love every song that I’ve heard off of this list so I am certain that you are quite right with the rest.

Excellent list! I especially love September, Kelly, Robyn’s. :)

I HIGHLY recommend you check out any track that artists record on Radio one. Usually, they have someone cover something completely off kilter for them, like most recently, Sugababes covered Spiralling, and Fall Out Boy covered Love Lockdown; both are BRILLIANT. One of my favorites was Will Young singing Don’t Cha… it was awesome!!!

One really random one was 30 Seconds to Mars covering Kanye’s “Stronger” and it’s amazing.
