The Best Non-Album Madonna Tracks

July 23rd, 2008 | Posted by Ricky

“Cyberagga”
B-Side to the “Music” single.

This song is a brilliant electronic treat, and is Madge’s second to be sung in Sanskrit (following “Shanti/Ashtangi” from the Ray of Light album). Co-produced by the fabulous Talvin Singh, this song actually translates into an ode to eternal goodness for all mankind:

May all be well with mankind
May the leaders of the earth in every way
Protect the earth by keeping to the right path

May there always be goodness
For those who know the earth to be sacred
May all the world be happy

Whatever I do
Whether my body, mind, sense, organs, intellect, self
Or out of natural inclination
I make it all an offering to
The all-pervading supreme being

Of course, being sung in Sanskrit, this message may be lost on most of us. However, now that you know, enjoy it on a deeper level.

“Queen’s English (MoMo’s In The House)
“Queen’s English” remix

Jose & Luis, two of Madonna’s backup dancers on the Blond Ambition Tour, released this little camp track back in the early nineties, much to the dismay of many. However, packed in the maxi-single was the “MoMo’s In The House” version. With Madge ad-libbing and singing, “Queen’s that read are the best, oh..” and telling the listener to, “Oooh, work it bitch!” You can’t help but love this little slice of pop heaven, even if the original isn’t really much to sneeze at.

“Super Pop
ICON fan club members Confessions On A Dance Floor bonus track.

My preference of the three Confessions On A Dance Floor bonus tracks. I love the lyrics, their simplicity and straight to the point message. I also enjoy the random sound effects, like a car racing away and a dog barking. Madonna states that she would be president if she were a man, but if she were a man, she’d be a dog (ruff-ruff-ruff!). She goes on and on about if she were this, she’d be that (”If I were a drink I’d be a lemon drop/If I was a song I would be ‘Super Pop’.) It’s easy, fun, and still somewhat of a message song. Definitely looshus to the max.

Has To Be”
B-Side to the American “Ray of Light” single, and a bonus track on the Japanese pressing of the Ray of Light album.

I’ve only recently started to enjoy this ethereal bonus track. With it’s hazy style of phrasing, Madonna’s meditation on how she knows someone is out there for her, is heavenly to the senses. As the song progresses, she finds someone, but he breaks her heart, and she ends by singing, “It could have been much worse/I might have never loved at all/And never known what I am worth.” I was fifteen when this song was first released and I didn’t like it at all. Ten years later, it’s quickly becoming one of my favorites.

“Supernatural”
B-Side to the “Cherish” single.

The first Madonna non-album track I ever heard, at the tender age of six. I love the opening guitar strumming, and how it goes into a funky little pop number. Madonna’s ode to having a love affair with a ghost is classic and beyond entertaining. “Never know what the neighbors will say/They already think I’m crazy/I wouldn’t like to wake up and find myself in the family way,” she sings to her spirited boyfriend. I always imagined her giving birth to little ghost babies, and wondered if she would endure labor pains because of it. My absolute favorite part has always been the very end when she says, “That super-duper-naturally big thing… it’s outrageously large!” As a child, I thought she was referring to an overweight ghost, but as I got older I eventually realized what she was actually talking about, and I love it even more! Most people know this song only in its remixed form which appears on the Red Hot + Dance compilation from 1992. This version is also very awesome, but the original has always been my preferred method of “Supernatural” tidings.
