To be disappointed

August 16th, 2008 | Posted by Ryan

As you may remember, I had posted an entry awhile back about albums that I was anticipating for the rest of the year.  One of those albums was the new Shiny Toy Guns album, ‘Season of Poison’.  Over the last number of years, the fanbase for STG has been growing and growing, pulling in a variety of music lovers from all sorts of genres.  They have toured, extensively, thoroughout North American and parts of Europe.  Their shows are smaller, more intimate, and full of energy and songs we can all sing-a-long to.

All of that has changed.

I heard their new song today, Ricochet, on YouTube today. Generally, I would post a link for you readers, but I will not be doing so this time for two reasons.  Reason 1: There is not video for the track yet, and I don’t believe it’s proper to post a video without an actual video to back it up.  Reason 2:  I no longer support this group and refuse to promote their music any further.

The song itself is almost metal sounding.  Long gone are the electronic touches, or playful lyrics that are easy to sing along with. Instead there are loud instruments and louder vocals which nearly come across as screaming non-sense.  One other thing that has changed is the female lead.

What was that?

That’s right, the infectious and delightful Carah has been ejected from the group.  After doing a wee bit of research I’ve discovered that the group has stated that she’s left on her own accord, whilist Carah has posted that she was kicked out.  The new female lead is Sisely Treasure.  Name sound familiar?  She was a top-10 finalist on the Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search For The Next Doll.  Her vocals do not carry the same level of emotion and sincerity as Carah’s did.  Whether or not Carah was ejected or left on her own accord is still up for debate.  If I had to make an educated guess, I would say that the group wanted to move away from the sound they’ve been peddling for the last 5 years, and Carah disagreed and felt they had something unique that the fans all loved.  Again, I’m only assuming that from the few puzzle pieces I have of the picture.

When I saw Shiny Toy guns last year, I was fortunate enough to meet the group after the show.  Carah was the one member that was most genuine and forthcoming.  She spent the most time with us and answered our questions and chatted with the few of us diehard fans that remained.  Luckily, I have read that Carah is in Sweden, working with a new band and creating some new music.  I look forward to hearing more from her.

For now, this group that calls themselves Shiny Toy Guns, will never be so for me.  The sounds and faces that I have learned to admire and appreciate have changed too much for me to continue celebrating them.

I totally agree with you on this! I listed to it once, and lost all interest. Plus, with all the hubbub about losing Carah, and the CONSTANT delays on their album, I just don’t see any aspects of the band I used to love.

I am a major fan of theirs too, but I can’t say that I will abandon them for trying something different. I will wait and see what the album has in store. As for the lead singer leaving, we can only speculate, as I am sure there are lots more items behind the scenes than we can see; which is the nature of famous people doing their thing.

I will miss her vocals, because they were amazing, but perhaps this new direction can have a place as well. I am sad that the prospect of that being reality, however, is not very promising, as you indicated.

    Hmpf.

Very disappointing indeed. I loved this band because of the great male/female vocals, but listening to their new song, that uniqueness is totally gone. I am excited to hear what her new band may come out with. I imagine STG will become just one of the many generic and uninspiring bands that litter your local HMV.

Not that they sound much like the old Shiny Toy Guns, but Mates of State does the male/female vocal thing in a really engaging way. They’re worth checking out…try “Like U Crazy”, “Ha Ha”, and especially “Think Long”.

I agree. I heard the new single and I didn’t know they had a new singer and I knew something was off. I totally was looking forward to their new album, but after a few listen to it, I know I am very disappointed. Hopefully Carah releases something just as amazing, if not better than what the new STG can put out.
