I was making Shan listen to horrible sad songs the other day at his apartment and then I started thinking about great pop songs unplugged.
Perhaps songs with a kick ass beat that were completely re-interpreted in an unplugged fashion that would give them a little different shimmer than we’re used to. These 10 are completely not all-encompassing; but ones you should probably check out none-the-less. Read more »

B-sides are one of my favorite things about music. I’m afraid they might be a dying art along with physical singles however. There’s something special about a b-side - everyone has an artists album but a true fan takes the time to hunt down and collect the b-sides. It’s a little something extra that not every fairweather fan gets to hear. I don’t know if I could ever truly pick my absolute favorite b-sides cause there are just so many that I love - but here are five that I… Read more »

Although I rock my iPod in the car with a radio transmitter, when I originally bought the car I was stoked it had a 6 disc in dash changer and a Mach audio system factory installed. Since the iPod boomed soon after I pretty much abandoned the cd player, but I do keep cds in it for when I’m just running a small errand or forget my iPod so I still have some jams. A few weeks ago I realized I was over all the cds I had in it,… Read more »

Kylie’s new video for “The One” just popped online this morning. I have to give credit where credit is due.
Let me start by saying that I hated this song when the album came out, along with “Cosmic” it was skipable, every time. But her record company got it right by setting the video (and hopefully the single?) to the Freemason’s remix which gives it the treatment it needs to be a hit.
Check out the retro video, it’s pretty hot, but personally my favorites from the ‘X’ era are “Wow” and “In… Read more »

1. “With Every Heartbeat” - Grovesnor
As much as I am a fan of Robyn’s vocals in the original, I am digging the pingy blips and soothing sound of Grovesnor’s version. It’s a bit slower, a little more rolling, and just overall a really nice take on the song.
2. “The Boys” - Dragonette
The original is, well, just that: an original. It takes some balls to spout off like Calvin Harris, for sure. But then Dragonette comes along, spinning it totally differently, throwing in their kicky little twists, and dare I say,… Read more »

1. “For the Boys”, The Cardigans
Arguably the best song from the Long Gone Before Daylight era. Somehow Nina’s dewy, dewy vocals really shine in this setting and with these lyrics, which seem like an ode to some tragic hero. She sounds so pretty when she’s jilted.
2. “Cherry Bomb”, Kylie Minogue
To cop a line from Robyn, the intro sounds like something illicit, like gonna get you in trouble. But really, the beat is deep and ominous, and then suddenly Kylie busts in, singing one of the sexier songs I’ve heard from her.… Read more »
