Five Neo-Northern Soul Tracks

November 14th, 2008 | Posted by Simon

Say what you want about Amy Winehouse. There’s one thing that no one can dispute: she ignited a whole generation’s love of the phenomenon that is Northen Soul. Popularized in England during the 60’s and early 70’s, this branch of soul music has been sampled and lauded by everyone from Soft Cell to Fatboy Slim, and more recently, Moloko and Duffy. Friday Five: Gettin’ To Know Macy

November 7th, 2008 | Posted by Shan

I recently had a few dates with a guy who pretty much loved all types of music but absolutely despised Macy Gray. I enjoyed giving him a hard time by telling him I was going to make him a “Best of Macy” mix cd (In actuality I made myself one a few years back!). I couldn’t fault him because I have an equal distaste for Mariah Carey. Yes, I did just say that, it’s out there and I’m willing to take the hate mail. Bring it.

But Mariah is not why… Read more »

Friday Five: Political Pop!

October 31st, 2008 | Posted by Shan

With the election just a few days away I thought it would be a great idea for a Friday Five of political pop songs! These are some of my favorites and thanks to the other Jiingo authors for suggestions for this list. It was harder than I thought to come up with just five although I’m sure there are plenty out there. Read more »

One of the most attractive qualities in a pop star, in my eyes, is true motivation, personal (not styled) style, and dedication. The last may be the most important–if a pop singer treats what they do as art, it is often self-fulfilling. And there is no better embodiment of this persona than Bertine Zetlitz. Read more »

Friday Five: 5 Albums I Regret Purchasing

October 17th, 2008 | Posted by Ryan

Ask any of my friends, I’m crazy about my CD collection. I don’t believe in digital downloads in terms of owning an album. I like the physical existence and adding it to my shelves of music. I love when people come over and browse my collection and ask me questions and opinions about the music I own. Then there are the albums that I’m embarrassed about. There are all sorts of reasons why I would be embarrassed about owning an album, but these are the 5 that peak the list. Read more »

Friday Five: Shan’s B-Sides

October 10th, 2008 | Posted by Shan

B-sides are one of my favorite things about music. I’m afraid they might be a dying art along with physical singles however. There’s something special about a b-side - everyone has an artists album but a true fan takes the time to hunt down and collect the b-sides. It’s a little something extra that not every fairweather fan gets to hear. I don’t know if I could ever truly pick my absolute favorite b-sides cause there are just so many that I love - but here are five that I… Read more »

Friday Five: Ryan Style

October 3rd, 2008 | Posted by Ryan

I feel that the last month has been slightly disappointing for music. I’m constantly trying to find something new and exciting to keep me entertained until all the favourites drop records by the end of the year. I’ve also been known to eye on the door for the next big thing. Today’s Friday Five includes tracks I’ve discovered over the last month that I declare as brilliant.

Across the Board

September 29th, 2008 | Posted by Simon

1. “Love Lockdown (Cenzo Remix)”, Kanye West

I have a feeling we’re going to be hearing a LOT of this song, both the original and and anendless cavalcade of remixes.  This one’s really clean, managing to flirt with some electronic elements, but never letting them overpower the vocals, and leaving the vocals themselves mostly intact while coupling them with a beat to which I could actually dance.

If you haven’t heard the original, I’d check that out first.  With this kind of melancholic Nina Simone-style delivery, Kanye is definitely trying out something… Read more »

The Things that Genius Hath Brought

September 19th, 2008 | Posted by Simon

So first off: oops.

I was without internet on Thursday, meant to post a Friday Five on Saturday, and it was opening day for the Apple store, so it just slipped my mind.  So I realized it on Wednesday.  My bad.

But back to music: I am in love with the Genius playlist feature on iTunes 8.  Seriously, everyone enable it, it gets smarter the more people use it.  Basically, the way this works is you pick a ’seed’ song, and it composes a playlist from your library based on other people’s… Read more »

1. Loco, Annie

This album (Don’t Stop) is/is going to be (release date: October 6) absolutely amazing.  I was worried that we were going to get a re-hash of Anniemal, but that’s totally not the case.  She’s taken her sweet time, for sure, but her sound is fuller and ages more mature, so it was worth the wait.  Every song has it’s own feel, but each is very obviously her own–it’s absolutely a cohesive collection.  I’ve been watching too much Project Runway.

The use of the electric guitar in this track got… Read more »
