In a previous entry, fellow Jiingo writer and music lover Shan professed his love for the newest Hilary Duff single, Reach Out. Despite his enthusiasm, and my own previous love for Ms. Duff, I have to say, that something just wasn’t sitting right with me and this song. See, a not-so-well known British artist by the name of Jamelia released a VERY similar record just a couple of years ago, and frankly I think that she used the sample better, and produced a better single as a result. Prior to last week, I’d never heard of Micky Green. Then, by chance, the (second) video for her song “Oh!” came across my laptop screen, and I decided to give it a chance and take a listen.
The simple beat, finger snapping and smooth vocals were soothing to my ears, and a nice break from the usual boom-boom-boom bass I’m often zoning out to. I found her album, and was very nicely surprised by what it offered.
White T-Shirt is a modern, yet bare bones, collection of songs. Each somewhat subtle and haunting,… Read more »

Temperamental? Yes, me too.
This album is my winter album. Every song is a mini-soundtrack to an evening spent walking around a big city at night. After a lover disappoints; a partner breaks it off. The moment where you’re miserable and you need to be out among the living to feel like there’s some semblance of hope in ever finding love again, in being whole again. Sounds dramatic, but so’s this album.
I cannot count the times in college that I walked around at 2 a.m. with this album blaring in my… Read more »

While randomly flipping through the television stations a few weeks ago, I noticed that everyone’s favorite eternal twelve-year-old, Mariah Carey had a new video playing on BET. Routinely bored by her recent work, but with nothing on in the afternoon hours before work, I decided to stop and take the song and video in.
I thought the song was rather decent, and decided to download it at work that night. I haven’t given so much ear space to a Mariah Carey song since the beginning of the Emancipation-era with “It’s Like… Read more »

If you don’t know who Roisin Murphy is,
I won’t be surprised. My lack of surprise shall be mixed with a little sadness and a little excitement. Sadness that Murphy’s name and music haven’t caught on fire the way they should; excitement because here’s my chance to plug/plug/plug.
Raise your hands if you remembered Moloko. No? “Do you like my tight sweater?” No? Fair enough. Well, Murphy and boyfriend Mark Brydon formed together in 1994 for what was just really a goof in the studio. However, a label picked up their… Read more »

Madonna, as an entertainer, is not underrated. However, over the course of her twenty-five year career, many songs get left behind in the mainstream due to the wacky things she does or says. With Jiingo creator Shan and I trekking north to see Her Madgesty tomorrow, I’ve compiled a list of the most, in my opinion, underrated Madonna songs. For all the hardcore Madge-Addicts, check it out and share your own choices. For subtle fans, take a look and find some lost treasures!

Over the past couple of year, the legendary Verve record label has been commissioning leading DJs from around the world to remix some pretty amazing jazz recordings from their vaults. The results have been amazing.
With remixes of Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday, Willie Bobo and the inimitable Nina Simone, who I adore, these classic songs have been given a fresh coat of paint, so to speak.
Remixers include Thievery Corporation, Felix da Housecat, Matthew Herbert, The Postal Service (I know!), Danger Mouse, Brazilian Girls, Diplo and so many more. Currently there are… Read more »

If you haven’t heard any of her songs, you hopefully have heard of her - or you’ve been busy living under a rock. While she’s not as hot a commodity for the tabloids or mainstream press as that other beehived Brit, Adele Laurie Blue Adkins may be an even more impressive talent than the aforementioned songstress. I can’t even quite remember what year it was when I discovered Amanda Ghost (Thanks to Ricky!) It had to have been my first or second year of college. Ricky had been watching an episode of Queer as Folk and heard a song on it that he was into called “Filthy Mind” by an unknown named Amanda Ghost. On a shopping trip to the mall he found the cd and decided to subject me to it in the car. Neither of us quite knew what we were in for, and… Read more »

I could probably write an entire review on this album. It’s so flippin’ underrated. So underrated infact that when I went to azlyrics.com to look up the lyrics to the song they didn’t even have her listed. Poor girl, you know if you ain’t on azlyrics.com you were a flop, cause they got everything!
Regardless, the album this song comes from is amazing and I had to take a moment to decide which song I should showcase. Shaznay was 1 of the 4 members of All Saints who were popular in… Read more »
