A Roisin by any other name

October 28th, 2008 | Posted by Justin

If you don’t know who Roisin Murphy is,
I won’t be surprised. My lack of surprise shall be mixed with a little sadness and a little excitement. Sadness that Murphy’s name and music haven’t caught on fire the way they should; excitement because here’s my chance to plug/plug/plug.

Raise your hands if you remembered Moloko. No? “Do you like my tight sweater?” No? Fair enough. Well, Murphy and boyfriend Mark Brydon formed together in 1994 for what was just really a goof in the studio. However, a label picked up their… Read more »

You Don’t Know Madge!

October 25th, 2008 | Posted by Ricky

Madonna, as an entertainer, is not underrated. However, over the course of her twenty-five year career, many songs get left behind in the mainstream due to the wacky things she does or says. With Jiingo creator Shan and I trekking north to see Her Madgesty tomorrow, I’ve compiled a list of the most, in my opinion, underrated Madonna songs. For all the hardcore Madge-Addicts, check it out and share your own choices. For subtle fans, take a look and find some lost treasures! Read more »

Baby, Did You Hear?

October 24th, 2008 | Posted by Justin

Over the past couple of year, the legendary Verve record label has been commissioning leading DJs from around the world to remix some pretty amazing jazz recordings from their vaults. The results have been amazing.

With remixes of Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday, Willie Bobo and the inimitable Nina Simone, who I adore, these classic songs have been given a fresh coat of paint, so to speak.

Remixers include Thievery Corporation, Felix da Housecat, Matthew Herbert, The Postal Service (I know!), Danger Mouse, Brazilian Girls, Diplo and so many more.  Currently there are… Read more »

Ladies and Gentlemen…Adele!

October 23rd, 2008 | Posted by Justin

If you haven’t heard any of her songs, you hopefully have heard of her - or you’ve been busy living under a rock. While she’s not as hot a commodity for the tabloids or mainstream press as that other beehived Brit, Adele Laurie Blue Adkins may be an even more impressive talent than the aforementioned songstress. Amanda Ghost - The Right Girl at the Wrong Time

October 19th, 2008 | Posted by Shan

I can’t even quite remember what year it was when I discovered Amanda Ghost (Thanks to Ricky!) It had to have been my first or second year of college. Ricky had been watching an episode of Queer as Folk and heard a song on it that he was into called “Filthy Mind” by an unknown named Amanda Ghost. On a shopping trip to the mall he found the cd and decided to subject me to it in the car. Neither of us quite knew what we were in for, and… Read more »

Saturday Song: Shaznay Lewis - Mr. Weatherman

October 18th, 2008 | Posted by Shan

I could probably write an entire review on this album. It’s so flippin’ underrated. So underrated infact that when I went to azlyrics.com to look up the lyrics to the song they didn’t even have her listed. Poor girl, you know if you ain’t on azlyrics.com you were a flop, cause they got everything!

Regardless, the album this song comes from is amazing and I had to take a moment to decide which song I should showcase. Shaznay was 1 of the 4 members of All Saints who were popular in… Read more »

The Way Is Random

October 11th, 2008 | Posted by Ricky

I often have my iPod on shuffle, regardless of where I may be at that moment. Whether it be in the shower, chilling in my bedroom, driving, generally being sexy, I never know what song may become part of the soundtrack to my life.

Shuffle is great, and I regularly find myself rediscovering things I had only gently paid attention to in years past. Here I’d like to recommend some nice finds, refound during the shuffle that is my life.

Princess Superstar - Meet You Halfway (Keep It On The Alright)
from the… Read more »

Saturday Song: Anna Abreu - Vinegar

October 11th, 2008 | Posted by Shan

I came across this song this past week on one of my “must find new music” searches. Normally I don’t find much when I’m in one of these moods but I was pleasantly surprised to come across this “unknown” artist. The song title entrigued me as well because when I first heard about Rihanna’s song called “Umbrella” I thought it was a ridculous name for a song and refused to even listen to it for it’s ridiculousness. How wrong was I! I did some Wiki research and found out that… Read more »

Jon McLaughlin - OK Now

October 7th, 2008 | Posted by Shan

Today my boy’s album came out! Jon McLaughlin of course! I had the rare pleasure of running to the store at lunch and hunting down a copy. I kind of figured that he wouldn’t get to be on the front display - and I was right. I dug through the M section and at first thought that they didn’t have any, which surprised me since he’s on a major label. After some more careful digging I found 2 copies buried behind that bomb of an album that Jesse McCartney just… Read more »

Your Inner ‘Nasty Girl’

October 5th, 2008 | Posted by Ricky

There was a time in my life when I was instantly intrigued if I saw the name Peter Rauhofer attached to any project. Such was the case when his remixes for Inaya Day’s cover of Vanity 6’s “Nasty Girl” were serviced. I knew the song was a cover, but had never fully heard the original track, and thus, fell deeply in love with Inaya’s version.

Two mixes were released by Rauhofer: Rauhofer’s Sleaze Mix [8:17] and Peter’s Reconstruction [9:49]. Both productions were epic, industrial treats to my ears, but it was the… Read more »
